We supply, install and upgrade commercial distribution boards and sub-mains — correctly rated, clearly labelled and certified, keeping your premises safe and compliant.
Distribution boards: the heart of your electrical system
The distribution board decides how power flows through your building, how faults are handled, and whether your system is reliable or a ticking time-bomb. An undersized board causes nuisance tripping (costing money every time a tenant's kettle + air-con trip the breaker simultaneously). An overloaded board hides faults — things can fail without tripping, creating fire risk. An outdated board lacks modern protection (RCDs, surge devices), exposing you to legal/insurance risk.
Sizing and specification
We assess your actual load (not guessed), design a board with proper RCBOs (one per circuit, so a fault on one doesn't kill everything), add surge protection for sensitive equipment, and spec everything to current standards. For multi-tenant commercial, we design sub-distribution so one tenant's fault doesn't black out others.
The switchover process
Replacing a live board is high-risk. We isolate your main supply (coordinating with the DNO), transfer load to temporary distribution if needed, fit the new board, test every circuit individually, and bring it live section-by-section. Depending on your site, this might be a 4-hour evening job or a carefully-phased multi-day project.
Cost and timeline
A straightforward board upgrade (same size/capacity): £1,200–2,000. Board upgrade + increased capacity (for new equipment/tenants): £2,500–4,500. Installation: usually one evening or a day depending on complexity. Cost pales against the cost of downtime from a failed board.
Documentation and compliance
Every board comes with a circuit schedule (what each breaker controls), load calculations (proving it's sized right), and a Building Regulations certificate. This matters for leases (tenants want proof of a safe supply), insurance (they'll ask), and resale value.
