Beyond the fixed-wiring EICR, we keep your appliances and equipment safe with portable appliance testing (PAT) and targeted electrical inspection. Ideal for landlords, offices, shops, schools and tradespeople who need documented proof that their plug-in equipment is safe to use. Need your fixed wiring tested instead? That’s covered by our dedicated EICR service.
EICR vs PAT testing — what's the difference?
It's a common mix-up, so worth being clear: an EICR tests your fixed wiring — the sockets, switches, circuits and consumer unit built into the building. PAT testing (Portable Appliance Testing) checks the plug-in equipment that runs off it: kettles, computers, power tools, extension leads, chargers and the like. Most landlords and businesses need both. If it's the fixed wiring you're after, see our EICR service; this page covers PAT and the wider inspection of your equipment and appliances.
What PAT testing involves
Each appliance gets a two-part check: a thorough visual inspection (damaged plugs, frayed cables, cracked casings, signs of overheating — which catches the majority of faults) and an instrument test using a PAT tester to measure earth continuity, insulation resistance and lead polarity. Every item is then labelled pass or fail with the test date, and recorded on an asset register so you have a clear, auditable list of what was tested, when, and the result.
Who needs it, and how often
There's no single legal interval — the law (the Electricity at Work Regulations) requires equipment to be maintained in a safe condition, and PAT testing is the recognised way to prove you've done that. In practice: offices with low-risk equipment might test every 1–2 years; busier environments, schools, gyms, salons and rental properties more often; and tools on a construction site every few months. We'll recommend a sensible schedule for your setup and can put you on a recurring reminder so it never lapses.
Cost and turnaround
PAT testing is usually priced per item with a minimum call-out, and the rate drops sharply by volume — a handful of appliances is a quick fixed-fee visit, while a full office or rental property is far cheaper per item. We work around you (early mornings, evenings or weekends for businesses), don't disrupt your day, and email the certificate and asset register promptly afterwards for your insurer or compliance records.
Targeted inspection and fault-finding
Alongside appliance testing we carry out targeted electrical inspection where you don't need a full EICR — checking a specific circuit that keeps tripping, investigating a flickering light or a warm socket, or verifying a single addition is safe. You get a clear explanation of what we found and a no-pressure quote for any fix, with the appropriate minor-works certificate on completion.
One visit, fully covered
Many landlords and business owners book their PAT testing and their EICR together so the whole property — fixed wiring and plug-in equipment — is certified in a single visit. It's tidier, cheaper than two separate call-outs, and means every certificate carries the same date for your records. Just ask and we'll quote the lot together.
