Extra Wall Socket Installation in Norwich

Ban the extension leads. We install extra power points, USB sockets, and data outlets to match the demands of modern living.

Most homes in Norwich built before 2000 simply do not have enough plug sockets. In the 1980s, a standard bedroom had one single socket. Today, that same room needs to power a TV, a games console, a laptop, a phone charger, and a lamp. The result? A dangerous tangle of 4-way extension leads and adaptors daisy-chained together.

At Yare Electrical, we help you declutter your home and improve safety. We can add additional sockets exactly where you need them—behind the TV, next to the bed, or inside cupboards for charging vacuum cleaners. We match your existing faceplates (whether white plastic, brushed steel, or brass) for a seamless finish.#

Are Your Sockets Overloaded?

Plugging heaters into extension leads is a major fire cause. Install a permanent wall socket for safety.

The Dangers of “Daisy Chaining”

It is tempting to just buy another extension lead, but it is risky. “Daisy-chaining” (plugging one extension lead into another) increases the resistance in the circuit, which generates heat. If you plug high-draw appliances like fan heaters, irons, or kettles into these strips, the fuse can easily overheat and melt the plastic casing.

Installing permanent wall sockets distributes the load evenly across your home’s “Ring Main,” ensuring your appliances run safely and your house is protected from electrical fires.

Modern Socket Options

A socket is no longer just a power outlet. We install a range of modern accessories to upgrade your lifestyle:

1. Integrated USB Sockets

Free up your 3-pin plugs. We install double sockets featuring built-in USB-A and USB-C ports. These powerful (3.1A) ports charge phones and tablets rapidly, leaving the main sockets free for lamps and laptops. They are perfect for kitchen counters and bedside tables.

2. Floor Sockets

Have an open-plan living room? Trailing a cable across the carpet to a lamp behind the sofa is a trip hazard. We can install flush-mounted floor sockets with spring-loaded covers directly into your floorboards or concrete floor, giving you power in the centre of the room.

3. Wi-Fi Extender Sockets

Struggling with Wi-Fi blackspots? We can install sockets that contain built-in Wi-Fi repeaters, boosting your router’s signal to the far end of the house without needing ugly plug-in boosters.

How We Install New Sockets

There are three ways we can add power to your room. We will discuss the best option for your budget and decor during our visit.

Option 1: Chasing In (Flush Finish)

This is the neatest finish. We cut a channel into the brickwork or plaster, sink a metal backbox into the wall, and bury the cable. Once plastered and painted, the socket sits flush with the wall, looking like it was always there. Note: This creates dust, which we manage with industrial vacuums and sheets.

Option 2: Surface Mounted (Trunking)

If you don’t want the mess of re-plastering (or if you have solid concrete walls), we can run the cable in neat, white PVC trunking along the top of the skirting board. The socket box is mounted on the surface of the wall. This is faster and cheaper than chasing.

Option 3: Fishing Walls (Stud Walls)

If you have modern stud walls (plasterboard over timber), we can often “fish” the cables down the cavity without cutting into the wall at all. This gives you a flush finish with zero mess.

Technical: Spur vs. Ring Main

As qualified electricians, we calculate the load before we install. We typically use two methods:

  • Extending the Ring: We cut the main ring circuit and extend it to the new socket. This allows the new socket to handle the full 32 Amps of power—essential for kitchens or laundry rooms.
  • Adding a Spur: We run a single cable from an existing socket to the new one. This is limited to 13 Amps (one fused connection unit). This is perfect for a bedside lamp but not suitable for a washing machine.

Specialist Locations

We don’t just put sockets near the floor. We think about how you use your home.

Behind Wall-Mounted TVs

Hanging a flat screen on the wall looks great, until you see the black power cable dangling down. We install power and HDMI data points directly behind the TV screen, completely hiding the cables for a floating look.

Kitchen Appliance Switches

Installing a dishwasher or integrated fridge? You need an accessible isolation switch above the worktop (grid switch) so you can turn the appliance off in an emergency without dragging it out from under the counter.

Outdoor Power

Need to plug in a jet washer? We install IP66 weatherproof outdoor sockets that are safe to use even in the rain.

Why Choose Yare Electrical?

  • Part P Certification: Even adding a socket can require testing. We issue a Minor Works Certificate for every job, proving the earthing and insulation are safe.
  • Matching Aesthetics: We carry a range of samples. If you have brushed chrome switches, we won’t install a cheap white plastic socket next to them.
  • Clean & Tidy: We know chasing walls makes dust. We seal the room, use dust sheets, and vacuum thoroughly before we leave.
