Transform your home with intelligent lighting. We design and install energy-efficient LED lighting schemes that blend functionality with stunning aesthetics.

Lighting is often the most overlooked element of interior design, yet it has the biggest impact on how your home feels. A single central pendant light can leave a room feeling flat and gloomy, while a layered lighting scheme can make a small room feel spacious and a cold room feel cosy.

At Yare Electrical, we don’t just “change lightbulbs.” We are lighting specialists. Whether you want to replace outdated, energy-guzzling halogen downlights with modern LEDs, or you need a complete lighting redesign for a new kitchen extension, our expert electricians deliver a flawless finish.

Still Using Old Halogen Bulbs?

Switching to LED can save you £150+ per year on electricity. Upgrade today.

The LED Revolution: Why Upgrade?

If your ceilings are full of old GU10 halogen spotlights, you are literally burning money. Halogen bulbs waste 90% of their energy as heat.

1. Massive Energy Savings

A standard halogen spotlight uses 50 Watts. A modern LED equivalent uses just 5 Watts to produce the same brightness. If you have 10 lights in your kitchen, swapping them to LED reduces consumption from 500W to 50W. That is a 90% reduction in your lighting bill instantly.

2. Longevity (Fit and Forget)

Old bulbs blow every few months. Our professional-grade integrated LED fittings are rated for 30,000 to 50,000 hours. That means if you use them for 4 hours a day, they will last for over 20 years without needing a bulb change.

3. Fire Safety

Halogen bulbs get incredibly hot (over 200°C), which can scorch ceiling plaster and pose a fire risk if insulation is laid over them. LEDs run cool to the touch, making them much safer for your home.

Kitchen Lighting: The Heart of the Home

Kitchens require a mix of “Task Lighting” (to see what you are chopping) and “Ambient Lighting” (for hosting dinner parties). We recommend:

  • Recessed Downlights: Positioned in a grid to provide general illumination. We use “Fire Rated” downlights that maintain the fire integrity of your ceiling.
  • Under-Cabinet Lighting: LED strips hidden under your wall units eliminate shadows on the worktop, making food preparation safer and easier.
  • Feature Pendants: Hanging lights over a kitchen island or dining table creates a stunning focal point.

Bathroom Lighting & IP Ratings

Electricity and water don’t mix. When installing lights in a bathroom, strict safety zones apply under BS7671 regulations.

We install IP65 Rated fittings directly above showers and baths. “IP65” means the light is completely dust-tight and protected against water jets, so steam and splashes won’t cause a short circuit. We can also install:

  • Illuminated Mirrors: With built-in demister pads so they never steam up.
  • Low-Level Marker Lights: Soft LED lights near the floor that come on automatically at night—perfect for midnight bathroom trips without waking the whole house.

Understanding Light Colour (Kelvin)

Have you ever bought an LED bulb and found it looked like a sterile dentist’s waiting room? That’s because of the “Colour Temperature,” measured in Kelvin (K). We help you choose the right warmth for the right room:

  • Warm White (2700K – 3000K): Soft, golden, and cosy. Perfect for living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Cool White (4000K): Crisp, clean, and energising. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices.
  • Daylight (6000K): Very bright and blue-white. Generally avoided in homes unless for specific art studio applications.

Smart Controls & Dimming

Lighting is versatile. You want bright light for cleaning, but soft light for watching a movie. Dimming LED lights can be tricky; if you use an old dimmer switch, LEDs will flicker and buzz.

We install specialist Trailing Edge Dimmers (such as Varilight V-Pro) that are designed specifically for LED loads, ensuring smooth, silent dimming from 100% down to 0%.

Smart Home Integration

Want to control your lights with your voice? We can install smart modules (like Shelly or Lutron) behind your existing light switches. This allows you to say “Alexa, turn on Movie Mode” or control your lights from your phone while on holiday to simulate occupancy.

The Installation Process: Minimising Damage

Homeowners often worry that installing new downlights means destroying the ceiling. At Yare Electrical, we take immense care.

  • Laser Alignment: We use laser levels to ensure your spotlights are perfectly straight and symmetrical.
  • Joist Detection: We scan the ceiling to find wooden joists and pipes before we drill, preventing costly accidents.
  • Dust Collection: Our drills are fitted with dust-catching bowls to stop plaster dust falling onto your carpets.
  • Fishing Cables: Wherever possible, we “fish” cables through ceiling voids rather than cutting channels, minimising the need for re-plastering.

Why “Fire Rated” Matters

Your ceiling is a fire barrier. It stops a fire in the living room from spreading to the bedroom upstairs for a certain amount of time (usually 30 minutes). When you cut a hole for a light, you breach that barrier.

We only install Fire Rated Downlights. These contain an intumescent pad that swells up when heated, sealing the hole and blocking the fire. Cheap, non-fire-rated downlights are a serious safety hazard and may invalidate your home insurance.
