Don’t let poor lighting ruin your renovation. We design intelligent, layered lighting schemes that transform houses into stunning, functional homes.
If you are planning a kitchen extension, a loft conversion, or a new build in Norfolk, lighting should not be an afterthought. Too many homeowners leave it to the last minute, resulting in the dreaded “grid of downlights”—a ceiling full of bright holes that leaves the room feeling flat, sterile, and clinical.
At Yare Electrical, we believe lighting is the fourth dimension of architecture. It dictates how a room feels. It can make a small room look expansive, a cold room feel cosy, and a functional kitchen turn into an atmospheric entertaining space at the touch of a button. We offer a comprehensive Lighting Design & Installation Service that bridges the gap between interior design and electrical engineering.
Building or Renovating?
The 3 Layers of Light: How We Design
Great lighting isn’t about brightness; it’s about contrast. We strictly follow the architectural principle of “Layering” to create depth and interest in your rooms.
1. Ambient Lighting (The General Layer)
This is the base level of light that allows you to move safely around the room. Instead of relying on a single central pendant (which casts harsh shadows), we might use:
- Coffer Lighting: LED strip hidden in ceiling recesses to wash light upwards, lifting the ceiling.
- Wall Washing: Angled downlights that bounce light off the walls rather than the floor, making the room feel wider.
2. Task Lighting (The Functional Layer)
Light where you do things. In a kitchen, you shouldn’t be working in your own shadow. We install:
- High-CRI downlights directly over the kitchen island or chopping board.
- Reading lights beside the bed or sofa.
- Illuminated mirrors in the bathroom for shaving or makeup.
3. Accent Lighting (The Drama Layer)
This is what gives a home the “wow factor.” We use light to highlight your home’s best features:
- Niche Lighting: Miniature LEDs inside shelving units to showcase ornaments.
- Floor Washers: Low-level lights that skim across textured floor tiles or stair treads.
- Uplighting: Highlighting architectural beams, brickwork, or fireplace alcoves.
Smart Controls & Scene Setting
The best lighting design fails if the controls are complicated. You don’t want a bank of six rotary dimmer switches on the wall that you have to fiddle with every evening.
We design “Scenes.” Using smart systems like Rako, Lutron RA2, or Shelly, we program pre-set moods onto a simple keypad:
- “Cooking” Scene: All bright task lights on 100%.
- “Dining” Scene: Task lights fade out. The pendant over the table dims to 50%. The LED strips under the island glow softly.
- “Relax” Scene: Ceiling lights off. Only low-level lamps and niche lights remain on for watching TV.
Kitchen & Open Plan Specialists
Open-plan living is the norm in modern Norwich homes, but it presents a challenge: How do you light the kitchen (a workspace) and the lounge (a relax space) in the same room without them clashing?
The answer is zoning. We wire the circuits separately so you can turn off the “kitchen” while sitting in the “lounge.” We also pay close attention to Colour Temperature (Kelvin).
We often use “Dim-to-Warm” technology. When the lights are bright, they are a crisp 3000K (perfect for cleaning). As you dim them, they automatically warm up to a candle-like 2000K (perfect for red wine and conversation).
Our Design Process
We don’t just guess. We plan your lighting with engineering precision.
Step 1: The Brief
We meet you (or your architect) to look at the plans. We ask how you live. Where will the dining table go? Do you read in bed? Do you have artwork you want to highlight?
Step 2: The Layout
We mark up your drawings with exact positions. We don’t just put lights in the middle of the room. We align them with furniture, joinery, and sightlines. We produce a “Reflected Ceiling Plan” for our installers to follow.
Step 3: Specification
We select the fittings. We don’t use cheap plastic downlights. We specify high-quality fittings with:
- High CRI (90+): To make your paint colours and furniture look true and vibrant.
- Low Glare Baffles: The light source is set deep back in the ceiling, so you see the light effect, not the dazzling bulb.
Step 4: Installation & Commissioning
Our qualified electricians install the wiring and fittings. Once complete, we return at dusk to “Commission” the system—angling the spotlights onto your artwork and programming the dimmer scenes to your preference.
Garden & Exterior Lighting Design
Design doesn’t stop at the bi-fold doors. We design seamless transitions between inside and outside.
By lighting the garden features visible from your living room (like a tree or a wall at the end of the garden), we prevent your windows from turning into “black mirrors” at night. This extends your visual living space and makes the room feel larger. Check out our Outdoor Lighting page for more.
